What does Wi-Spy do?

The Wi-Spy is a small spectrum analyzer that will show all activity on the 900MHz, 2.4GHz, or 5GHz spectrum. Using a Wi-Spy you can troubleshoot WiFi, Cordless Phones, Microwaves, Zigbee, Radio, Bluetooth, and many more devices. Seeing these devices will help you locate and identify interference.

How does Wi-Spy work?

The Wi-Spy scans and sends all of the RF traffic it captures to a computer where the bundled software Chanalyzer, displays it in a readable format. As soon as you turn on the Wi-Spy 2.4x you'll get a colorful graph giving you a better understanding of your wireless surrounding.

The changes in color represent the radio activity around you. The brighter, red colors show the most traffic. The darker areas represent clear frequencies for your WiFi access point. It is that easy!

Wi-Spy and its software, Chanalyzer, allow each user to record all of the activity around them. It is very simple, and fun to use!

Which Wi-Spy is right for me?

Three of MetaGeek's Wi-Spy devices scan the 2.4GHz band. Most Wi-Fi traffic occurs in the 2.4GHz band, including interference from other devices.

Wi-Spy DBx- This is the device of choice for wireless professionals. It is also used by many companies making the move to 802.11n or 802.11a. This device is the best MetaGeek has to offer. It offers the best bang for your dollars by troubleshooting 802.11a/b/g/n (both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands) with the highest resolution of any of our devices. More...

Wi-Spy 2.4x- This device scans the 2.4GHz band (802.11b/g). It belongs in the toolbox of every IT administrator dealing with wireless access points. The antenna is external and swaps out easily for a directional. Record live data similar to a tivo, and play it back later. Access radio data remotely to troubleshoot multiple 2.4x devices simultaneously. More...

Why cant i select Wi-Spy in the Wi-Fi tab?

The Wi-Spy scans the physical layer, and can't read packets. It is only a spectrum analyzer and is not capable of functioning like a wireless network card, therefore inSSIDer and Chanalyzer can not use it to pull access point information. Chanalyzer will function without a wireless card, but the additional information can be very valuable in site surveys.

Is Wi-Spy capable of packet sniffing?

No. The Wi-Spy captures radio activity of all kinds above and beyond 802.11. It will show radio activity from microwaves, cordless phones, bluetooth, zigbee, and more. Because it is a spectrum analyzer it will show all radio activity.

For our customers looking for a great packet capture utility, the AirPcap suite is the perfect solution! You can buy a packet analysis tool from MetaGeek. The AirPcap compliments the Wi-Spy very well.

What is a spectrum analyser?

A spectrum analyzer reads radio activity, and graphs it according to frequency and amplitude. The Wi-Spy v1 is the world's smallest 2.4GHz spectrum analyzer.

Can Wi-Spy be used with Zigbee?

Absolutely. For ZigBee channels 1-10, use the Wi-Spy 900x. For ZigBee channels 11-26 use the Wi-Spy 2.4x or Wi-Spy DBx.
